the southern crab nebula ✨

It appears to have two nested hourglass-shaped structures that were sculpted by a whirling pair of stars in a binary system. The result is that both stars are embedded in a flat disk of gas stretching between them. This belt of material constricts the outflow of gas so that it only speeds away above and below the disk. The result is an hourglass-shaped nebula. The bubbles of gas and dust appear brightest at the edges, giving the illusion of crab leg structures. These "legs" are likely to be the places where the outflow slams into surrounding interstellar gas and dust, or possibly material which was earlier lost by the red giant star.

A clear night sky featuring the constellation Orion centered in a dense starfield. The prominent red star Betelgeuse is visible in the upper left as the shoulder of Orion, glowing distinctly with a reddish hue. Orion’s Belt, consisting of three closely aligned stars, is located near the middle of the frame. Below the belt, the Orion Nebula, a bright, hazy area in Orion’s sword, is visible. A faint galaxy, Meissa (or part of Orion’s “leg”), can also be seen near the lower region of the constellation.

webb and chandra combined images 🤩
This is a composite image of star cluster NGC 602, in vibrant and festive colors. The shape of the star cluster strongly resembles a holiday wreath. The cluster includes a giant dust cloud ring, shown in greens, yellows, blues, and oranges. The green hues and feathery edges of the ring cloud create the appearance of a wreath made of evergreen boughs. Hints of red representing X-rays provide shading, highlighting layers within the wreath-like ring cloud. The image is aglow with specks and dots of colorful, festive light, in blues, golds, whites, oranges, and reds. These lights represent stars within the cluster. Some of the lights gleam with diffraction spikes, while others emit a warm, diffuse glow.
