To be clear: This likely means that he will let a pedophile and human trafficker walk free to keep his Epstein cover-up going.

There can be no doubt now that this is a battle of good versus evil and the narratives too many Americans have allowed themselves to be seduced by.

Imagine what the spirit of Walter Reuther could achieve in these dark times if we carried his model with us in our resistance and our progressive work. 🧵23/23

"Walter Reuther is the only man I have ever met who could reminisce about the future."

"Walter Reuther is the most dangerous man in Detroit because no one is more skillful in bringing about the revolution without seeming to disrupt the existing forms of society." 🧵22/23

He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 by President Bill Clinton, who remarked at the ceremony, "Walter Reuther was an American visionary so far ahead of his times that although he died a quarter of a century ago, our Nation has yet to catch up to his dreams." 🧵21/23

On May 9, 1970, Walter Reuther and his wife died in a plane crash in foggy conditions near Detroit.

Michael Parenti wrote: "Reuther's demise appears as part of a truncation of liberal and radical leadership that included the deaths of 4 national figures: JFK, Malcolm X, MLK, and RFK." 🧵17/23

Reuther survived 2 assassination attempts. One in 1938 and another in 1948, where 4 shotgun slugs shattered his arm into 150 pieces.

Eleanor Roosevelt said of this shooting: "We have a right to protect men who are working in the interests of their fellow men."

Reuther worked for environmentalism.
In 1965, he called for the "massive mobilization of citizens... a popular crusade not only for clean water, but also for cleaning up the atmosphere, the highways, the junkyards and the slums and for creating a total living environment worthy of free men." 🧵14/23

After Selma's Bloody Sunday, Reuther sent a telegram to LBJ that said, in part: "This shameful brutality by law enforcing agents makes a mockery of Americans’ concepts of justice and provides effective ammunition to... our enemies around the world who would weaken and destroy us." 🧵11/23

Reuther was on stage with King & civil rights leaders at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

Reuther persuaded planner Bayard Rustin to move the location from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. (Rustin agreed as long as the UAW paid for the sound equipment. They did.) 🧵 10/23

Reuther helped to organize The March to Freedom in Detroit, which had 125,000 attendees in June 1963 & became a dress rehearsal for later that summer. At the UAW's Solidarity House, Dr. King drafted his most memorable speech and gave a version of it when Reuther and King spoke at the march. 🧵9/23

Reuther might best be remembered as a staunch supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. He marched in Selma, Montgomery, Jackson, & Birmingham. He arranged $160k to bail Dr. King and protestors out of jail in Birmingham. The #PROUAW donated $75k to the NAACP's efforts in 1954's Brown v. Board. 🧵8/23

The press was there to witness "The Battle of the Overpass," even though Ford's goons tried to confiscate the cameras, one snuck out.

Ford's cruelty was national news. Henry Ford pulled his ad money from Time, Life, and Fortune magazines in retaliation. Finally though, in 1941, Ford caved. 🧵 5/23

Reuther was soon surrounded by 40 of Ford's thugs. They knocked him to the ground, kicked and punched in the head and body, picked him up four feet off the ground and then slammed him to the concrete repeatedly. They threw him down 3 flights of stairs and kicked him so he couldn't get up. 🧵 4/23

Then there was Henry Ford. He vowed to never allow a labor union at Ford. On May 26, 1937, Walter Reuther was passing out pro-union handbills near a Dearborn Ford plant. 🧵 3/23

Americans of the Progressive Era watched as giant corporations generated more wealth than previously imagined. In “A Very Different Age,” Steven J. Diner focuses his social history on how these changes affected regular Americans of diverse backgrounds.

Journalists once sought the truth, challenged dishonest power, and held their profession as noble. Real journalism is key to the people’s power in any #Progressive cause.

“Citizen Reporters” by Stephanie Gorton tells of that time:
When truth rewrote America for the people.
