If you’re looking for beautiful lake views, but a more leisurely hike, I’d recommend the nearby West Rattlesnake 👍

⚠️ Due to the tricky footing and steep rocky terrain, I would advise against this one in slick conditions. If you plan to do this in winter, bring spikes ⚠️

Note, these obstacles are optional you can bypass them and still enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Squam and Lake Winnipesaukee.

Regardless the route, there are still scrambles. The grade is steep for this region of New Hampshire. These factors render the Morgan-Percival Loop as a difficult hike.

Then, stay left and walk to the base of the cliff. This cave is at the bottom of that cliff. You’ll enter what appears to be a hole in the ground and come out on the other side! It’s a fun adventure to say the least 😀 #newengland #hiking #wmnf

🚘 parking to this trailhead is on Lincoln Gap Road, which is subject to seasonal road closures (will be closed 10/15/25, typically re-opens in mid-May). For more information refer to: lincolnvermont.org/highway. There are other routes to the summit, but this is the quickest one.

📈 1,600' elevation gain (overall moderate difficulty, minor scramble at the top but manageable for most hikers with proper traction in dry conditions)
🕓 expect 2-3 hours

Expect to spend about 3–5 hours on the trail, depending on your pace 🥾 Bring proper footwear if it’s wet, the rock slabs can get slippery. Want more New England beginner-friendly hikes with tips and route notes? Follow along for weekly reviews of New England hikes!

Total round trip is about 5.6 miles with 1,600 feet of elevation gain, which is pretty moderate for a New England 4K footer!

Did I mention the views here 😍 on a clear day, you can see the Adirondacks, the surrounding Green Mountains, and the White Mountains.

I have a couple left as well!

On a clear day, you can see endless rolling peaks that remind you exactly why hiking in Vermont hits different.
So if you’re looking for your first 4K peak in New England, Mt. Abe is calling your name 👣✨

Who’s adding this one to their list of New England hikes? 😍

😮‍💨 Difficulty: mostly moderate (just a short 0.3 mile scramble near the summit. A few rock slabs can get slick if it’s wet, so watch your footing. But overall, this trail is super manageable for most hikers 🙌)
