Last week I had the great pleasure of speaking on ABC Radio National's Life Matters show, talking with Jacinta Parsons about children's gaming & #Roblox in particular. You can now stream the episode online:

How safe are you kids on the internet? We've learnt a lot over the years about how to use parental controls and restrict their access - but how much control do we really have?

Just in case it wasn't super obvious that #GenAI companies need fresh m̶e̶a̶t̶ ̶c̶o̶n̶t̶e̶n̶t̶ ̶training data, nothing hits this home better than watching OpenAI flirt with building a social network so it can eat people's data directly.

Looking forward to having you join the team, Adam! :)
I am immensely pleased to announce that I'll be joining the faculty at Curtin University in Perth Australia as a lecturer in Digital and Social Media next month. I could not be happier to be returning to Australia to take on a faculty role in a department so closely aligned with my interests.

Each year before I teach @netstudies.bsky.social #WebMedia I search for the perfect example to open the first lecture that evokes the complexities/convergences of media online. This year, I'm pretty sure I'm kicking off with the almost-live Australian Open Tennis avatars!

Protecting your online identity is a skill that everyone needs to learn – even young children.

Our new competition is a chance for children to submit ideas for a children’s storybook based on the theme, "Getting the balance right: You decide what you share"

We were on Twitter from May 2008 for more than 16 years, so it seems very strange to be setting up a new presence here, but the old place is largely intolerable now and, well, the vibe here is pretty good and late 2024 seems to be all about the vibes and the feels!

Pleased this #OpenAccess paper in New Media & Society is out; I learnt a lot working with Jin Lee & Crystal Abidin looking at how the worst excesses of the child idol system in South Korea are becoming a worrying template for child star making globally!
