I just uploaded this week's Flummoxagon puzzles. I _may_ have made the expert level one a little too hard. Let me know!

Here's a tutorial of how you play a simple scenario. The Flummoxagon comes with 13 game boards and we'll be posting more regularly online, so it's endless replayable

It turns from a tiling puzzle to a game like a Sudoku. The Flummoxagon is just a space within which these game boards can be played. You start with a given set of tiles and need to use the constraints of the color and shape find the unique solution. And it's very satisfying once it comes together.

This led us to the idea of a difficulty curve: many solutions is easy, in the middle it gets hard, but more constraints get easy again. If there's only 1 solution, your decisions are more forced. We could choose a subset of the puzzle that had 1 solution. These scenarios turned into the real puzzles

We decided to add colors to try and make it more compelling. It was visually more interested and introduced more ways to put it together that would feel meaningful. Like you could add a map coloring rule where no adjacent tiles have the same color.

We were originally making a tiling puzzle, similar to Pentaminoes, but with every polyhex from 1 to 5. The problem was

A. This wasn't very original
B. It had limited play value

Even though it has millions of solutions, it's hard to come up with compelling reasons to put it together more than once.

I don't see why they need an update. I haven't aged one bit, and my hairline is in the exact same location. You do have new glasses though

We had a wonderful workshop building gyroids with students at Auburn University. It turns out the desire to wear a gyroid is universal

Always gratifying to see my art at the airport. Off to speak at Auburn University for the Day of Design

I have been play testing our new puzzle which is _NOT_ a jigsaw puzzle. It’s been super fun. How long do you think should an easy puzzle take? What should each one of these sets of tiles be called? Internally we’ve been calling them scenarios but also considered “board” or just “puzzle”

My new automatic rivet loader isn’t very efficient but it is very cute

This piece is the proof of concept for a new bilayer construction process. Two sets of panels which are perpendicular to each other interconnect to make a rigid surface. The prototype is constructed from just 1/16” sheets of plywood yet holds it shape when suspended from a single point

The Marbling series is the first to feature our "Wave" cut style which adds vortices to the "Maze" cut simulation inducing spirals to form along edges. We made it to complement the fluidic theme of the images, plus it's just a really fun cut

Tonight on stream we'll be the the Large Marbling Infinity Puzzle. It's a tiling puzzle made in collaboration with @amandaghassaei.bsky.social using a simulation of paper marbling she created. At 363 piece, it should be one of the harder puzzles we've done. Join us at 7:30PM EST

I've been building some little tools recently like this gyroid cropping tool. Let's us quickly design shapes where you rotate and scale a gyroid inside a mesh. It's raymarched in a shader so it runs it real time. Based on this shadertoy www.shadertoy.com/view/MffGzS

We continue to work on the eclipse puzzle on tonight’s stream. This puzzle is harder than I thought it would be. I wonder if the moon side would be easier or harder

Last week we completed the Neuron Puzzle in 4:17, our hardest puzzle yet. Tonight we begin the Eclipse Puzzle. The double sided image let's you incrementally eclipse the sun when you assemble it.

Join us on stream tonight as I try it for the first time.

Day 20 #MathArtMarch Repetition

The Lizard Infinity puzzle is an Escher inspired tiling puzzle made of lizard pieces. Each lizard is morphed such that every one is different, but the entire puzzle still forms a morphing gradient tiling
