in doing so, it also puts a lot of occultism and astrology (as well as just many many things about medieval and renaissance literature, and therefore everything influenced by those things, witches a lot of things!) into context (which is why i bring it up at all here)

this is kind of a wild book rec from a lurking fairy, but i suspect you might find "the discarded image" by cs lewis interesting. i'm reading it & it explains the world-model of medieval europeans (all the nested spheres, 5-element type stuff) and traces its syncretic christian and pagan influences.
