Sorry, there's no way to remove people from replies in Bluesky - I was only quibbling with Paolo over his use of "fake", which was either meaningless or misleading.
I've no problem with anyone having a favourite idiom and espousing it, or observing that a particular idiom is widely used!

They are not! The Mac menubar was present in the original single-tasking Systems 1-4; it was present in the cooperative Systems 5-9; and is still present in the preempted versions. Which of those menubars are "fake"?!
The answer is none of course. The type of OS has nothing to do with GUI idioms.

"Iconbar" and "multitasking" are unrelated, in the same way that "menubar" and "multitasking" are unrelated on Macs.

RISC OS had to take over management of the iconbar because it is shared between tasks, but it was always an Acorn idiom from the launch of the Archimedes.
Also note that the Archimedes PRMs talked about WindowManager becoming multitasking well before RISC OS was released.

Hang on, the iconbar in Arthur wasn't "fake". It wasn't built into WindowManager as handle -1, but WAS an established convention epitomised by the "Desktop" and replicated by lots of Archimedes programs. For example, here's Highnote, which I used extensively before RISC OS:

Was in the foyer of my local leisure centre at 11am today and the 2 minute silence was interrupted by a guy in full body armour with a sword asking when the two minute silence would be because there was no clock in the Bushido practice room and none of them were wearing watches.

Quite. I left VM a couple of years ago. Went to Sky and it's like night and day. However, the Sky-branded Comcast streaming box is irritatingly non-compliant and regularly confuses the soundbar, TV, and yours truly.

I was a SwiftKey user from day 1. It was magical. Then Microsoft bought it and it's been getting steadily worse ever since. You'd think "keyboard" would be a solved problem.

I wonder how many internationally important software products were built in architecturally inappropriate country piles that look more like the museum for the industry than its birthplace?!
Been there, done that, crunched the gravel driveway.
