We ended up replanting everything the builder's "landscaper" planted with an eye towards more native species. We have milkweeds, a couple sweetbay magnolias, and a sycamore. They are all thriving with virtually no maintenance.

From what I've learned (thanks to @yellowbrickurban.com), Belle Meadeians (Meadenites?) doing everthing they can to keep people out seems very consistent with the "historic character" of the neighborhood...
