Found this spectacular Rose chafer in the garden this afternoon (on edge of Ipswich, Suffolk). Had larvae in compost heap last year. Research on Suffolk status online suggests its quite rare, unless it has become more common recently? @suffolk-nats1929.bsky.social

Here, 2023 & 2024 no of species and total of moths recorded shown. Species not too different, but total number of moths from all recorders c.100,000 down, so around 25% less moths caught in Suffolk as a whole. Ties in with experience that there appeared lower nos in traps @bc-suffolk.bsky.social

Was Suffolk moth group indoor meeting last weekend so thought I'd show a few slides from that. Here are last 7 years stats. I took over as recorder in 2019 + new website launched with online recorder, boosted records. Last year slight drop in recorders, records and species no doubt due to weather

With the year coming to a close time to report on moths from my site in 2024 in VC25 (Suffolk). Total numbers 38% down on previous years, 797sp (860 last year). Still 13 new for site list so not all bad inc Yponomeuta irrorella, Euchromius ocellea, September thorn & Black-spotted chestnut #Teammoth

2024 has been a bad year for moths in Suffolk, but there were been a few highlights inc 8 new for the county: Phyllocnistis asiatica (no pic), Sparganothis pilleriana, Pammene herrichiana, Antispila treitschkiella, Passenger, Phyllonorycter sagitella, Triangle (larvae) & Sallow clearwing
