From ‘care’ to capabilities
Amartya Sen’s (unfortunately named) ‘capabilities approach’ is a framework for evaluating well-being, development, and social justice based on what people are genuinely able to be…

Personal note: London has been home for a very, very long time, but as of today, I am also officially a Brit - that is to say, a British citizen. I feel relieved and I feel grateful - but not, perhaps, in the forelock-tugging way GB News/Starmer expect a new immigrant to be.

Talking to an official at the Department of Health once about whether people responsible through their behaviour for their health conditions should still get treatment (eg smokers for lung cancer). He said ‘The NHS believes in the right to redemption.’ I feel we could do with more of this now.

Love this. Putting forward a ‘north star’ centred on universal wellbeing has been one of the most valuable things @socialcarefuture.bsky.social has done
What's the purpose of government? I have promised optimism in my writing but this week I'm posing a rather existential question that often gets forgotten. Plus a motto and some nuggets of joy.

I think this government’s policies and record on disability is to date awful, but it’s got nothing to do with this piece of political shorthand. Can disabled people who don’t work not be ‘working class’?
