I feel that his ability may fall on whomever is most responsible/closest to responsible in his death so if he drowned in Mersault, he could have subsumed Chuuya. His ability wouldn’t work on Dazai, but Chuuya was an accessory and the next responsible person.

I also theorize that he takes the life spans of whomever he subsumes. When he nears the end of it, his health declines and he needs to get killed to begin a new life cycle.
