"Pleistocene and early Holocene megafaunal extinctions can stimulate us to reevaluate what is natural in the world and what sort of natures we seek to conserve or restore. If we accept the increasing evidence for a strong human role in these early extinctions, it forces a look inwards and 1/2

Isabella Tree's TED talk is out! 🗣️🍃

We may think of rewilding as something huge - restoring nature and wildlife in vast landscapes - but anyone who has a garden, backyard or window box can do it.

Isabella tells us how. Watch the talk ⬇️

Sheep-puddled margins provide excellent habitat in this Teesside pond, trampling inhibiting growth of reedmace and maintaining open conditions. Both Chara and Nitella stoneworts are present along with a range of pioneer insects such as Mottled Backswimmer (Notonecta maculata).

A new nature recovery project is set to begin at four sites in the Shropshire Hills.

Shropshire Council said the Rescuing Rocks and Overgrown Relics scheme would focus on habitat restoration at former mining and quarrying locations, including Poles Coppice in Pontesbury, Snailbeach and the Bog.

The well trampled broken ground shown in Cat's post is a nice example of "intermediate disturbance" in which the highest diversity of species are able to find a niche. My bet is by early summer next season the open ground will host a riot of new growth.

When an 80 acre parcel upstream (which happens to be the headwaters of this little creek) was clearcut this summer, I beefed up my bda's (beaver dam analogs) to slow the water and capture silt erosion from the bare soil. Heavy rain last night provided the first test.

Pine martens are such gorgeous little animals, and as omnivores perform a great range of vital roles within the forest ecosystems that are their home, acting as predators, scavengers, seed dispersal agents, and more.

Their name in Irish is 'an cat crainn' – the tree cat.

We are constantly told by the media and authorities that these are both 'forest'.

One is a complex, diverse native ecosystem, full of life. The other is an industrial monoculture deadzone.

They could not be more different.

God, #waxcaps are just fabulous aren’t they?

And if their grasslands get damaged they are gone. Like ‘20 years for partial recovery but maybe no coming back’ gone

Makes me both full of awe (that they still exist at all, let alone in number) and so bloody scared for their future

What wonderful behavior!

Besides being cool, it's also incredibly useful. #bulldens provide habitat for various insect species, of which sand bees are perhaps the most well-known.
