Philly native, Eagles fan, middle school science teacher, widow, mother of two, Nana B to two. President of the National Education Association.
I had the privilege of visiting Barrett Elementary with @neatoday.bsky.social colleagues to kick off #AEW2025! A heartfelt thank you to the cafeteria workers who welcomed me onto lunch duty and to every education support professional who does the work behind the scenes so our students can thrive.

Today is Election Day! If you haven't already, go get an "I Voted" sticker of your own.

Let's elect some pro-public education candidates today.
November 4, 2025 at 6:36 PM
Educators understand the assignment. And that assignment is: mobilize to elect pro-public education voters!

My biggest congratulations to @coalitionbuilder.bsky.social, President and CEO of National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, on celebrating her 30th anniversary at the helm of this powerful organization! And no better way to celebrate than at NCBCP's Annual Spirit of Democracy Awards.

The people of Georgia are speaking out.
NEA members are speaking out.

The people are speaking out: no kings in our country. Democracy only.

No more invigorating way to spend a Saturday than fighting for our democracy at #NoKingsDay. And an honor and a pleasure to do it alongside @warnock.senate.gov and @staceyabrams.com.
October 18, 2025 at 8:23 PM
Today I am in Georgia joining thousands on #NoKingsDay to say: we will protect our democracy.

We will reject authoritarianism.

90% of parents are against banning books.

All children deserve access to excellent, diverse stories.

Celebrate #BannedBooksWeek with me by donating banned books in your neighborhood!

Honored to join the @blackinfonet.bsky.social today to talk about all the crises facing education in this moment—SNAP cuts, educator intimidation, and more.

Thank you, Vanessa Tyler, for this essential conversation in this critical moment.

It was an honor to speak on a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute panel this week, to discuss student success and educational excellence in the current landscape.

Every year, I take a back-to-school tour to hear directly from educators and students and families across the country.

Without a doubt, the best part of my job is these moments in classrooms and communities.

Schools are the heart of every neighborhood.

On my back-to-school tour, I saw the best of this country: our public schools.

In CA, I toured a school food pantry. In IA, I joined educators to hand out books at the Labor Day Parade. In AZ, I visited a district resource center for families in need. Above all, I talked to educators & students.
September 11, 2025 at 6:54 PM
As I reflect on my back-to-school tour, I return again and again to the educators who stand in the gaps. The ones managing resource centers in Arizona, running school food banks in California, or mobilizing against anti-public education policies in Iowa.

Educators truly do it all. Because we must.

Our immigrant students need our support and love now more than ever—and that is exactly what these incredible Dream Centers in Alhambra do.

@wearecta.bsky.social members are helping these students live into their brilliance, despite this incredible challenges they are facing.

My favorite moments throughout the year are when I get to visit schools and talk to students. Thank you to the Alhambra school district for the opportunity to meet some incredibly special immigrant students.

I was lucky to witness the work of Creighton District's Family Resource Center today. They provide food, clothes, baby supplies, pre-K classes, adult education, and more, all for free—including "community baby showers" where expectant parents receive handmade blankets, toys, and some joy.

Students can't learn when they are afraid to attend school.

I was incredibly moved to hear from leaders in Roosevelt School District about keeping students and families safe and secure in the face of ICE abductions. Their care and courage are a model for communities facing this across the country.

As I begin my back-to-school tour today, I'm reflecting on my time in Chile, addressing the @UNESCOSantiago World Summit on Teaching.

The foundation of a quality education system for all students is high quality teachers who are prepared, respected, and supported as professionals.

No better way to spend my Labor Day than walking in the Des Moines parade—and then breaking bread with Iowa educators.
September 1, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Happy Labor Day from Des Moines, Iowa's parade! My first stop on my back-to-school tour, and I am celebrating the working families that keep our schools—and our countries—running.
September 1, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Yesterday, I joined @momsrising.org and @civilrightsorg.bsky.social at #NABJ50 to highlight how parents, educators, and community leaders are speaking out for all students—and against the attacks on public schools.

Back-to-school season shouldn't rob our educators of hundreds of dollars every year, when they dig into their own pockets to buy pencils and tissues and notebooks for their classrooms.

Our public schools need to be fully funded.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

This legislation—hard-fought, hard-won—was nothing short of transformative for so many.

But ableism is still pervasive, inside the classroom and out. It is our duty to continue the fight for inclusion and accessibility.
