Architect and Neighborhood Maker,

Cities should have the form and density to make them more convenient to walk in than to drive. You can’t address climate change without acting on that.
Look at the caption. Yikes. The ad tries to make you like the concept of 24-7 surveillance by government or even non-government (just as scary) with the promise of attending a football game or concert without the drudgery of carrying a physical ticket (or iPhone). Uggh!

We are not in an evacuation zone, but for the first time since I’ve lived here, I’ve packed a little go bag.

This photo was taken by my wife about ago looking north about 1/2 block from our house. The fire appears closer in the photo than it is in real life.

Yeah, it’s pretty scary. Here’s a view looking north in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Santa Monica

It would be interesting to explain this without relying on conventional partisan politics. I’ll try. Exercise? Rates of smoking? Prenatal care? Medical insurance coverage? educational attainment? Other?

Except when busses park on them. Bollards at both ends of the block are important.

Brand new protected 2-way cycle track, but no bollards at the end of the block so a F’ing tourist bus parks in it. Driver said he had a permit from the city. He lied. I contacted Marcum, the accounting firm that was advertising to suggest this didn’t help their brand. They did not respond.

3) And the results? There hasn’t been a pedestrian fatality this century and beyond. In all, 28 years without a tragedy. #sharedstreets 🌟🛑🚲

2) In other words, it has few of the engineering solutions designed to keep us safe, and yet, it is remarkably safe. While the speed limit is 15mph, enforcement is a combination of police presence AND the natural behavior of drivers in such a milieu.

1) #VisionZero Collaborating with Crested Butte,CO on a live-ability strategy. It’s a town where pedestrians and cyclists amble freely, practically oblivious to automobiles due to the presence of very few sidewalks (only on its main commercial streets), and no bike lanes or traffic signals.
