Read poetry, read non-fiction on subjects you aren't normally interested in, read novels translated from other languages reflecting culture that isn't your own, read old books, watch movies, documentaries, watch plays, go outside and watch people as much as you can, be in the world!
In general, if you ONLY read your genre, what you come out with will be bad copies of bad copies. To create interesting, compelling characters and settings you have to, as this person says, have intellectual interests outside of that.

i always forget how many books i have. i looked on the main shelf of books that i go to at the moment and i didn’t find the book i was looking for, but then i saw the 100 books i got stuck in the closet in my room and realized it might be there🤣

Public Libraries can be wonderful places where children and adults can find books that they can see themselves reflected in, no matter who they are, and books that can introduce them to entire other lived experiences. Both are so valuable!
