On Nov 20, the NSF NCAR High Altitude Observatory (HAO) celebrated 85 years (you read that right: 85 years!!!) of studying the Sun! Founded in 1940 and then merged with NCAR in 1962, HAO has conducted world-class research, pioneering coronagraph development, eclipse expeditions & more!

Let’s explore the NSF NCAR Timeline! In 1961, NCAR found its forever home in Boulder, CO, on Table Mesa. After a vote by Boulder residents in favor of the site, the land on Table Mesa was donated to the NSF by the State of Colorado.

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

The team aimed not only to get a better picture of the air in and around NYC– where ocean, city, and forests converge– but also how pollution ebbs and flows in 24 hours. NSF NCAR pilots would fly the plane, a “flying lab” with research equipment, at both high and low altitudes to collect data.

MPAS' fine mesh simulates the atmosphere in great detail (around 2.3 miles!), providing a hi-res look at atmospheric conditions/weather systems that influence storms hundreds or even thousands of miles away. The image on the left is a lo-res forecast versus the hi-res forecast on the right.

NSF NCAR scientists are working on an experimental hurricane forecast using advanced computing w/ Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) run on the Derecho supercomputer. So far, this new system predicted Typhoon Ragasa, the strongest weather system this year, many days ahead in high definition.
