As for shortcuts, there was a cheating epidemic long before AI. Students cheat using AI for the same reasons they used a cheat sheet. We need to change the culture of grades and learning, and create more meaningful assignments.

It is going to take local personal engagement to reverse the tide. Just winning the house in the mid terms will not solve the problem. Just as Biden winning didn't solve the problem.
