Found my love for trail running with the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series! ⛰️ Signed up for all 5 races in 2024 knowing no one, and found my community. I'm not fast, but I crushed my PB on all 5 races this past season! Thrilled to announce I'm a 5 Peaks Ambassador for 2026!

Haven't done this in a LONG time! The truck is getting her winter tires put on so I had some time to myself. Went for a beautiful walk first. Now I'm working on some blog posts I'm VERY behind on in Starbucks.
What a lovely morning.

Can't run quite yet - sprained ankle is not 100% healed. But I joined the Edmonton Trail Sisters tonight and walked with these two lovely ladies. Great conversation, beautiful evening, and the ankle held up ok!

Winter prep done! Laid down an inch of leaves on the garden beds for soil protection, bug habitat, and rich nutrients come spring. Free mulch from my parents' yard! Thanks @robin6-64.bsky.social! 🍂

Strike day 8 - march for public education this morning as Danielle Smith was giving her "State of the Province Address". AB is not doing well Danielle!
Thank you to the MLAs that are showing up to support public education! @janisirwin.bsky.social @davideggenab.bsky.social

Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm grateful for the quiet moments in nature that remind me to breathe, slow down, and stay grounded. The changing leaves, crisp air, and stillness of the outdoors are gentle reminders that tranquility lives in the little things. Wishing you warmth and a little calm today.

Today is #WorldTeacherDay and I'm at a rally getting ready to strike tomorrow.
Alberta students deserve better. Underfunded classrooms hurt everyone.

Are you at the Beginners Teacher Conference in Edmonton this weekend?
Stop by and say hi!
I'm talking all things outdoor education 🌳🌿

I did a lot more walking on this trail run than I expected. I was having a hard time keeping my heart rate low enough. But it was such a nice way to spend the morning with Kira - we both really needed the "wildfire smoke free" time outside!

My #TrailRun in #DinosaurProvincialPark was next level! I tackled a 10km loop so I could wander through towering rock formations, spot desert plants clinging to life, and imagine the prehistoric world that once roamed here. Hot sun, dusty trails, endless views. 10/10 would recommend. #ExploreAlberta

Another great #TrailRunning race with 5 Peaks this morning! Chickakoo Recreation Area is a great spot to run. Lots of hills, cloudy, and not much mud. I beat last year's time by 6 minutes!

5 Peaks #TrailRunning race today in GoldBar #YEG.
The past 24 hours of rain meant they had to reroute the course to protect the single track trail - very happy they made that call.
Thought I was going pretty slow but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my end time!

Beautiful night for a #TrailRun with Trail Sisters in the Edmonton #YEG river valley.

And I got to make a cattail bracelet!
It's a very cool process of twisting the fibres to make them incredibly strong!

Our last stop of the day was the Trappers Rendezvous! It's an exhibition put on by the Alberta Center for Trapping and Bushcraft. I will admit, some of my ideas were changed. Their take on wildlife management was just ANOTHER perspective on the biodiversity in the boreal forest!

Then we took a look at the Lac la Biche Museum where we learned about the fur trade and the immense amount of birds they have!

Today was full of biodiversity talk again!
Our first stop was the shore of Lac la Biche where we went through some activities from Inside Education and Project Learning Tree.

This past week I had the PLEASURE of meeting Jenna - a #GrosvenorTeacherFellow from 2023 who went to Japan!
I feel so fortunate to have the time to connect with her.
Together we have learned about biodiversity in the boreal forest in AB.
I have lots of new ideas I'm excited to try with students!

In the afternoon we had a wonderful hike in Beaver Lake with Alberta Parks. We went through some activities that would be great for students!
Very refreshing!

First up this morning was taking a tour of Cenvous Energy's SAGD (steam-assisted gravity drainage) oil sands drilling facilities. They use drills and pipes to get the oil out instead of open pit mines.

In the afternoon we talked to the Athabasca Watershed Council about their water quality testing and education programs.
We finished the day with a senior wildlife biologist from Owl Moon Environmental telling us about their work on monitoring wildlife in reclaimed lands.

We stopped in Lac la Biche to talk to ecologists from Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries. They showed us how they mimic fire behaviour when they are harvesting - not clear cutting squares, keeping some tree stands still standing, etc. This helps retain biodiversity and the forest can recover quicker.

Very excited to have been selected to attend Inside Educational Summer Institute! I'm heading to the northern part of Alberta to learn about biodiversity in the Boreal forest. I can't wait to see all the comparisons to my #GTF24 trip to Costa Rica and Panama! #InsideEdPD #Biodiversity #Alberta

So my #TrailRunning and #Backpacking training has been suffering. Rolled ankle since Monday, wildfire smoke is affecting my asthma and allergies, and it's a stressful time as a teacher in Alberta. Ugh. Any suggestions?

So very proud of myself right now.
I finished this race 8 mins faster than last year!
