The morphology of ferns is: the 'dots' are called sori (singular sorus). They contained smaller structures called sporangia (singular sporangium). In the sporangia are the microscopic spores.
It was a mystery until the late 1700s and mid 1800s as to how ferns reproduced.

I love that! Someone doing their PhD in the same lab as me was really into it and would tell me all about it, she had loads of different air plant types
