This resource holds information on nearly 100,000 archaeological sites and buildings located on, or adjacent to National Trust-owned land.

The types of features recorded include standing buildings, earthworks, buried archaeology, historic garden and parkland features, and archaeological landscapes.

The fireplace is ornately decorated & covered in 15th- 16th century text. Throughout the rest of the house are examples of ritual protective marks, such as compass-drawn designs & taper burns 🔥

Vallance actively 'collected' both structural elements & interiors to add to the house - one of these was the fireplace in the Great Hall. The fireplace is recorded to have originally been located at the George, an inn or hotel at 31 High Street Sittingbourne.

We're delighted to be working with MJC-Associates to record the graffiti & inscriptions at Stoneacre. The house is a medieval timber-framed building, with many later alterations to the fabric, including those undertaken by Aymer Vallance, who presented the house to the National Trust in 1928.

The National Trust’s oldest nature reserve, Wicken Fen, is said to be haunted by the Lantern Men, evil spirits whose lights flicker across the marshes and lure people to a watery grave.

We're excited to be working with Wealden Archaeology Group at Scotney Castle! During October, the team has been undertaking GPR survey to learn more about the lost buildings depicted on 18th-early 19th century plans, to the west of the Old Castle.

During the dig, participants, volunteers & Trust archaeologists worked alongside Matt Williams, from Time Team & Dr Roger White, leading expert on Wroxeter Roman City & its hinterland. Schools, youth groups & community organisations also took part in a range of activities.

"In the end it took us the full two weeks to locate the moat in the corners of two of our trenches. The problem was that the moat had been buried under up to 1.5 metres of soil and rubble to create a level area to layout the 17th century garden."

We've got a little update from the excavations on the lawns of the Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire.
Angus Wainwright, NT Archaeologist, says: "We teamed up with @oxfordarchaeology.bsky.social and Cambridge Archaeology Field Group to carry out this dig in front of hundreds of visitors." 🧵
