My favorite part about being a discourse analyst is exactly this. It's nice to have labels for things we notice but can't quite pinpoint...and then feel validated that it's not just me overthinking but an actual 'thing' that has been documented as happening routinely.
« Growing up, I always picked apart what people
said. I was so excited when I found discourse
analytic tools that give evidential backing to how
talk works and what it means. »-Natasha Shrikant, U of Colorado Boulder #HumansOfLANSI #lansi2025 photo by @rovinglinguist.bsky.social

Me ready to destroy a presenter with a tough question (jk!). In all seriousness, I had the best time at @lansi2024.bsky.social sharing about @francescaorfw.bsky.social my upcoming book, "Race talk in institutional settings: A language and social interaction perspective" and learning from others!

Qualitative linguists/discourse analysts who have moved into industry (but not as freelancers): what fields and areas have you moved into, what kind of training have you had to acquire, what tips would you give to someone starting a job search out of the academy? Thanks for any pointers.
