There’s arguable value in someone who’s first entry into a long running franchise is the one they are reviewing
There’s value in someone who has extensive history and adoration in a franchise they are reviewing

I read @kayin.moe's highly critical review of Metroid Dread last night, which was a really interesting experience since I remember enjoying that game when I played it a few years ago, but while reading the review I basically agreed with most of the criticisms made.

i genuinely understand why people think shmups and touhou are all about rote memorization i just wish i could communicate how deeply untrue that is. once you learn a stage well enough you can improvise in these strange, beautiful ways you would have never thought possible

i probably wouldnt mind the repetition of hades so much if it had a soundtrack half as good as any given touhou game

Bioshock is a really severe example of a game totally fumbling the ball at the end. If it wasn't for the absolute melodramatic schmaltz of the last 5 minutes (and general tedium and lack of focus in the stage before it) I'd be so much hotter on it.

Thinking about Difficulty more because I was popping off about it on stream tonight, but I keep going back and thinking to how people give like.. intro reading/watching/listening lists for subjects that are dense and hard to get into, so people can build literacy in various mediums and genres.

I also feel like DeS has some of the best boss designs for an EXPERIENCE like, you only have like a few of what would be considered modern souls bosses but you get so many weird dudes with such a weird spread of gimmicks and they're mostly part puzzle/strategy and vibes.
I do love bosses, but I do hope we get more successors to Demon's Souls, where you're a clumsy guy trying to not fall into a pit. That game felt so much more like an adventure to me than Elden Ring much of the time.
