Currently reading: Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom, Clinton, Catherine, 2005, Back Bay Books/Little, Brown and Company Hachette Book Group, New York.
Does the phonetic spelling of the #HarrietTubman quote approximate the accent of a black Eastern Shire native from the mid to late 19th Century or did some white person mess this up?

SNAP beneficiaries by state don’t quite align with poverty rates, as Republican controlled states are more miserly with welfare services, and more suspicious of the poor, but the GOP has a long history of hurting its base to win political points.

Now reading this, and of course her birthdate wasn’t record. It’s fascinating that no enslaver that I’ve ever come across bothered to dignify the enslaved by at least marking down the basic human facts.

Looking forward to this.

“America was indebted to emigration for her settlement and prosperity. That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts.”

Kirk was not doing it “exactly the right way.” The both sides of this argument is either a cynical Trojan horse, or naive pablum. Ensconced as a “public intellectual” via a job at the gray lady, Klein doesn’t realize he’s been faced to look into the niche and not so as to survey the terrain.

Annnnnnd, this is why I don’t trust Ezra Klein. That or he’s just not that smart. Kirk was a man tearing our country apart. His death is a mere accelerant. A convenient excuse to move forward a project we’re deep into.

When’s the last time an NFL mascot was arrested for on field shenanigans?

Have read a lot of Civil War books recently, so changing it up and dropping back in time to the Texas Revolution to start a thread on American Latinos.

@CNN can you get Jake Tapper to write a book on this shit?

In the next, the defense, we see “plucked” being used to simply mean “picked,” by an unstated process. One that happens to be public, open, and competitive.

Harris was picked via the only process available when Biden stepped down.

A diagram of a bad take. In the first case “plucked,” is used to say that the subjects are not legitimate. That their rise was due to them fitting some arbitrary, superficial standards of an unstated, secret, powerful, other.

The ten most dangerous jobs in America last year were…ok it’s a list from 2022. I couldn’t find a clean list from 2024, but it’s the same result pretty much every year.

Police killed around 1,200 people in 2024. That’s out of about 50M people having interactions with police officers last year.
May 28, 2025 at 12:00 PM
165 officers died in the line of duty last year. Most died in accidents or of similar causes. 64 were killed.

3-Stabbed
12-Vehicle Assault
49-Gunfire

There’s probably some room for accident or lack of malicious intent in those numbers.

There are around 750,000 police officers in the U.S.

After emancipation, racism really took off. It wasn’t necessary to develop all these complex fears of black people when they were legally restrained.

For some reason it’s easy to find the political breakdown in racial groups but not the racial makeup of each party’s voters, but with one you can find the other. So not a statistician, but here you go.

Censorship raised materialism above humanism. The joy of sex was replaced with sparkle. Desire for intimacy became a desire for ownership.

Sultan: Rolls-Royce Phantom II. 4.3 litre, 30 horsepower, six cylinder engine, with Stromberg downdraft carburettor, can go from zero to 100 kilometres an hour in 12.5 seconds. And I even like the color.
