The new Lyndal Roper book Summer of Fire and Blood is great; also recommend the Peter Wilson 30 years war book and To Rule The World on Habsburg dynasty is a bit more popular leaning, but still a useful frame

For 19th and 20th century Jewish history—many of the major players are historians so Simon dubnow, Abraham Geiger, zacharias frankel, and Leopold zunz (and others) had Jewish political careers and academic historical careers
