It's fascinating that the less time I spend chasing the news, the more I write about music, and nature, and the meaning of things.

Not to say we shouldn't stay current, but that stepping back often gives us the perspectives we need to engage in a less reactive manner.

I couldn't read There's Always This Year by Hanif Abdurraqib without reflecting on #MarchMadness and had to write my own reply to the season as a #UConn fan from the self-proclaimed Basketball Capital of the World.

I wrote a little bit about almost drowning as a child. But of course it’s about a lot of other things too. Like hoarding mercy, which seems to be a trend right now.

Of the many inconveniences presented by a chronic inner ear problem, limiting time in front of a computer is a new challenge. Most of my ideation and first-draft writing is now by hand. I don’t entirely hate it. Who else does a lot of hand writing?

Does anyone else sit down to write on a Monday and think—where did all my words go?! Maybe daylight savings erased my vocabulary recall.

Why is it often cheaper to buy a tv and watch brain-rot than it is to subscribe to publications that have deep journalistic integrity and reporting? It’s the same reason highly processed junk food is more affordable and accessible than healthy whole foods.

Polarity leads to profits. Engagement is the currency of any algorithmic platform, so there is an honor system to both our consumption and creation. Regardless of a crowded digital environment, we have to keep our integrity in tact. It matters.

While reviewing a historical survey of censorship, I’m struck by how intense the fights have been over freedom of speech and expression. We have the same struggles today but truth is buried and smothered rather than burned. For now. Keep writing.

Substack is riddled with people looking to turn a buck with content. It had this "for writers" vibe at first and now it feels like another engagement mill. I'm hoping to find other poets and writers who are on there for more than profit. HMU. #amwriting #writingcommunity #writing #substack #poetry

“Pessimism is irresponsible .” @anneapplebaum.bsky.social thank you for bringing your clarity and knowledge to the Connecticut Forum tonight. I sort of hoped you and the Admiral would say we were all overreacting but it’s good to know we are in this together.

Parents: resistance is teaching our children the difference between patriotism and nationalism, courage and cruelty, virtue and violence, honesty and manipulation. Raising kids to become the bright bold future our world needs IS the work of resistance.

You cannot celebrate grace while withholding it from others, just as you cannot rejoice in mercy while hoarding it for yourself.

Got my first "Violating an Executive Order" and "I'll make sure you lose federal funding" parent threat today for teaching "DEI" books in our upcoming "Liberty and Justice" themed unit. Even in "Blue" Massachusetts we're dealing with this.

Anyway, don't obey in advance, and don't obey later.
