You do sometimes get the choice though its a relatively small number of cases.

Since I started studying law, a lot of friends tell me (after the fact obviously) that they have done jury service. A curious thing is that this exchange nearly always happens:

There are issues with how we make our Jury pools, but they are more diverse than 'lay people who volunteer for their own reasons'. I think a lot would improve by more efforts to recruit a more broad variety of Magistrates.

I broadly agree with you. We'll see if I still do when I have been before them in the new year. The major difference (and my colleagues tell me the problem) is that Mags are self-selecting.

Absolutely. I mean the day *sucked* but that moment helped. And hearing your story reminded me of it and cheered me up today, when grief hit me again.
