Used today’s 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (and the song of the same name) to workshop how to produce a TikTok/Instagram-style video with my media meteorology class. Kinda wish I’d just told them to run with this for this week’s assignment - some really neat ideas.

Football hot take: Any kick that hits the upright gets one point for the kicking team. If it bounces in on a FG attempt, it’s four points.

Periodic reminder: A “ground stop” for XYZ airport means traffic destined to fly to XYZ is being held on the ground at their points of origin, not that anything has “stopped” at XYZ.
So, a “ground stop for CLT” means planes at *other airports* are stopped from leaving for CLT.

Wolfpack Nation! Do not let the warmth of the afternoon sun fool you! Temperatures will CRASH at sunset, leaving us in the lower 50s at kickoff and deep into the 40s by the time the game is over. Stay warm! Bring your (red!) jackets/coats and your hot chocolate money.

experiencing severe turbulence in the southwestern eyewall."
These men and women are not being paid due to the US government shutdown. Not to mention that according to AOML's director emeritus Robert Atlas, they are down 40-50% staff. #Melissa

So, with the Blue Jays in the World Series and Rush going on tour again, do we get notorious baseball fan Geddy Lee singing ‘O Canada’?

Just a reminder that NWS is considered essential during a government shutdown. Meteorologists will still go to work, forecasts will still be made, watches and warnings will be issued, data will flow. We won’t be paid until the shutdown ends, but we’ll still protect life and property as always.

Fascinating bit of insight into how to interpret model ensembles of the disturbance that could affect NC/SC as a tropical storm hurricane early next week. Thanks @burgwx.bsky.social!
IMPORTANT NOTE 🚨
When looking at ensemble means, beware of the "survivors bias". For example, the GEFS *mean* misses the coast... but most GEFS members make landfall!
This has to do with the storm timing. Consider how some members move the storm faster than others... (cont.)

Hey @xkcd.com - I think you might have inspired this.
Almost half of North Carolina has seen their worst ever tropical event within the past decade, including storms such as Florence and Helene.
Does this match your local perception? What do you remember about these storms?
