relative to the grassroots campaigning that can occur at the state leg district level. I think it will ultimately be a modest effect, but there are likely enough folks that turn out to vote for their neighbor/friend/dentist/whatever and then also cast a vote for the top of the ticket

Hijacking this thread, but I'm actually working on exactly this question with an undergrad researcher. We're still in data collection phase, so no results yet. But, our thinking is that while the Meredith piece is strong, there's a difference between two candidates running for statewide office ...

given the number of states with democratic trifectas vs republican ones, this suggesting the gop has a deeper well in tit-for-tat, it seems more the former than the latter. but hard to tell

I think the other question is what effect this has to placate the "release the files" folks. The problem of dabbling with conspiracy theorists is that if literally everything is released, it may still not placate them
