We and our needs are complex. To thrive, most of us require support on a number of different fronts. After 14 years of having community services decimated by austerity and a pandemic (the ongoing health consequences of which are still ignored and misunderstood) large numbers of people too sick to work was always an inevitability. Reeves and the far-too-numerous media voices who insist (based on no evidence whatsoever) that 'genuine disability' is exaggerated need to hear stories like mine. Human beings are not little productivity nodes, activated by the presence of a CV coach when we manage to get a GP appointment. Proposed solutions to unemployment therefore need to be far more creative than anything offered so far.

A warning has been issued after fake letters were posted through letterboxes, claiming people would have to house refugees if they flew St George's flag. The letter said that "patriotic" households displaying the country's flag will temporarily house refugees because ‘we know you would be proud to assist your country’.

This autumn I’ve been working with men’s mental health campaigner Sam Delaney and charity CALM on webinars explaining why misogynistic online influencers don’t just harm girls and women but give advice that is anathema to the mental health of boys and young men. Wrote about it for the NEU’s mag….
My work as an educator and researcher on mental health takes me into schools and colleges all over the UK. I regularly conduct focus groups with 14-to 18-year-olds and ask them about their experiences online. When I speak to teenage boys about what I consider to be misogynistic content creators, such as online influencer Andrew Tate, they often respond by saying: "I don't agree with what he says about women, but he makes some good points about working hard or keeping fit." After Netflix's Adolescence was screened last spring, I joined forces with Sam Delaney, a men's mental health campaigner, to develop a webinar for parents and teachers on this topic. Sam's take on some aspects of the so-called life advice being dished out in the manosphere? ‘We need to show boys that it's all bollocks’ Believing your value is tied up exclusively in your productivity and body image is toxic for male mental health. As is the idea that men must isolate themselves, never express emotion or ask for help. These are the patriarchal notions partially responsible for the tragically high male suicide rates. While exercise is beneficial for both mental and physical health, an obsession with muscle building, which involves being immersed in gym culture to the exclusion of all other hobbies, is the opposite. Ultimately, boys are sold a lie that makes them miserable, but the cause of that misery is redirected at women Sam and I take a two-fold approach. First, we believe teenage boys need to understand how manipulative social media is and how algorithms actively reward extreme and shocking content. A study from Dublin City University found teenage boys will encounter misogynistic content online within 23 minutes. If they engage with it, the algorithm responds by flooding their feed with similar content, placing them in online silos where everyone they encounter agrees that 'feminism has gone too far'.

This is Katie Lam, Conservative leadership hopeful, just casually talking about deporting anyone who she doesn’t believe is ‘culturally coherent’ in the Times this weekend. This puts her to the right of Enoch Powell. And there’s been silence in media on these comments.
Much like Jenrick, Lam has been accused of shifting with the prevailing winds on issues of identity and immigration. She certainly shares his unsentimental toughness on the subject. "Everybody who's in this country illegally I think needs to go home," she says. Indefinite leave to remain is off the table, too. "There are also a large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn't have been able to do so. It's not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn't have been able to do so. They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people’.

I don’t want to say the words ‘I told you so’ re when the papers were insisting young ppl were flocking to Reform and I, who work with young ppl, said that didn’t seem correct to me, so I’m just going to leave this here…
