She lifted her head from an awkward angle and rubbed the crust of her eyes with her free hand. The leftovers of crying until she had no tears left lingered. Her left hand still clenched Da’s. Both their fingers were cold, but a certain stiffness had settled in his when she slipped free her hand. She couldn’t bring herself to look at his face. Not yet. So instead, she twisted on the chair and stared at the black bird pulling a flailing moth from the corner of the window. For a moment, the crow stared back. Then, with a scratchy caw, it flapped away into the eerie dawn light which spoke of a rain shower that had passed in the night and a wan promise of scattered sunlight.

Remember Brise dancing in the snowstorm? Well here's Ellie, who at this early point in the story is wondering if the woman she rescued from the coal mine is in fact an angel as she watches her dance in the heart of a flurry.

I'm actually working on a different book now but I decided I needed to do a test drawing of Brise and Ellie from "The Turbulent Appearance of Brise Collier" before I start the cover.

This is Brise. She's an air sprite who got stuck in a human body due to a coal mine explosion.

Goodreads 5 star review for An Ambitious Woman and her Very Normal Pet. Review text: This was the first derby novel I've ever read and it was so much fun! It being a derby book(read the foreword it explains the concept - basically authors get a book cover and a couple of months to write a story to fit it) is only relevant in that there are the occasional typo but the book is honestly so well realised I wouldn't even have known it was speed-written if not for the foreword. I adored all the characters - even though I didn't like Antonio at first and was sure I'd never grow to do so, by the end I rooted for him just as much as I did Sybil and everyone else. While the story starts with Sybil's death and has war themes and trauma, it's actually quite cosy and just so lovely. The concept of the bones/constructs was wonderful with each of the bones having their distinct personalities.
