There is some good news however! In mid July I’ll be moving to a Senior Analyst role with a strong research component at the UK’s Office for National Statistics. I’ll be applying the skills I’ve learnt to solve more immediate problems and help the UK gov better use its data to inform policy.

Finally, none of our groups work would have been possible without the incredible efforts of our postgrad students including Duncan Austin and @tharvey.bsky.social. They will carry the torch onwards as we finish up EPOCHSv2, please do hire these amazing scientists as they enter the market next year!

It’s been an amazing few years and a privilege to work on the frontlines with JWST. I thank @conselice.bsky.social for providing me this unique opportunity. I also thank the high-z groups in Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Sussex, Portsmouth, Warwick and Edinburgh who offered me job hunt assistance.

Thanks. I did get a wave at 11:20-40 ET. But had more come in at 1400-1420. Have all of them now. Thanks for everything that staff at STScI have done this cycle!

We changed tac this year from few very large programmes to lots of smaller targeted ones. The ones we’ve heard back from were generally 2nd quintile so decent but not enough.

Just checking if the feedback emails are still going out? We’ve had few not come through

4. The overlap of astronomers and sci-fi nerds is high. For me,
Battlestar Galactica is the top one though I’m partial to some Star Wars and The Expanse. Movie-wise: I like The Martian, Sunshine, Moon and Arrival.

3. For over 12 years I played the trumpet and euphonium, spending the later years in a competitive youth brass band. We toured northern Spain and performed at a Diamond Jubilee event attended by the queen!

2. I’m partially blind! I practically can’t see out of my left eye, it looks like someone took a DSLR lens and cranked the focus all the way to one side. I can just about tell large shapes, but can’t read even the biggest letter in an eye exam or tell who people are with it.

1. I first got into astronomy when I was 12. I was fortunate enough to have parents who spotted the Space Shuttle Atlantis was due to launch while we were on vacation and we went to see it. I was sold there and then.

Here I was 11 years later, having started my PhD, visiting Atlantis in retirement.
