Let’s set aside the fact that not everyone has or wants a smartphone. Building a publicly accessible database of every citizen and resident will be target number one for state actors and criminal alike. A government app on everyone phones becomes an open invitation for authoritarian abuse.

In a perfect world they may make your life easier, in the real world they are impractical, a cybersecurity nightmare and a tool for authoritarian measures, not just for this government for future governments

But for a fully open-source project to be closed-sourced like Redis, Elasticsearch, or MongoDB were is a massive rug pull for the open-source communities that support these projects. That kind of shift causes long-lasting damage—even if the projects are reopened later.

I just default to Postgres for SQL databases because that’s what I know and what I have used, but I’m not opposed to using MySQL if there’s a particular need or reason for it.

I’m pretty sure anyone can run a Relay if they wanted to. But do you always need to? also hosting a server that host other people’s data is a legal nightmare for individuals.

The most important thing is the ability to run your own PDS, so you can host your own data.

That’s fine for a simple single request or simple PoCs, you don’t need to over complicate things.

However in a real world projects, I like TanStack Query tanstack.com/query/latest or SWR swr.vercel.app as a lightweight alternative.
