Delighted to get my author copy of this - including my chapter with @siobhanhyland.bsky.social on some of our wellbeing approaches from the @searchlightarchive.bsky.social. A fantastic first book from the annual conferences of @uninorthampton.bsky.social’s Centre for Historical studies.

So the Greens have gone for a leader who wants to push their party to be more radical and populist, who is a former Lib Dem. I mean. I wonder if anyone has tried that before, and if so I wonder how it went....

This summer the Extreme Right Research Network will be hosting a free in-person workshop/conference covering the Extreme Right. With talks from academics, practitioners and professionals, it should be a great day. Please share with your networks, and get in touch if you are interested in attending.

This arrived at the archive today - a bittersweet moment with the last print issue of Searchlight. Some fantastic contributions and revelations within its pages - and of course, a bit about its continuing legacy from me. Really proud to be part of this moment.

Todays archival item comes from sunny Cardiff. Cardiff AFA in 1992 gets in touch with Searchlight to discuss BNP vandalism of a Jewish cemetery, and any known links between the BNP and Welsh nationalists who had been burning down holiday homes.

Just one more week before my winter break and I’m shattered in a way I’ve not been before. Just feeling worn out with instability and worry. I know many others are in the same or worse boat. And thus, please enjoy my cute-but-actually-an-arse cat

Some interesting early finds today as I check on one of our store boxes. A photo here of a 43 Group membership leaflet. Note the high quality for the time, and the highlighting of their On Guard magazine, an early pure anti fascist print culture. Honorary membership £1 1s per year.

Going to be digitising more Searchlight to bring our holdings up to date this afternoon. Suitable as this arrived a week or two ago. The penultimate print issue of Searchlight. Really looking forward to the retrospective.

Also in our NSG box, this NSM membership card for Michael Edwards. 25 year old Michael joined in November 1962 into the paramilitary Spearhead section, initially paying a single week’s 2/6d subscription before paying a further two 10/-d monthly subs. The membership card included a photo.

List of Nazi material being sold by Barry Smith of Lancashire, from our National Socialist Group file. The list is annotated and there is a letter from Mr Smith to NSG Area 5 leader Donald Mudie explaining most of the items he wanted are now sold. He did manage to get an Afrika Corps helmet.

Today has been largely
Archive digital exhibition training, meetings about funding bids and paperwork. That said, nothing amazingly exciting. But I’m
WFH so I get an excellent assistant.

Updating my British history module material, and looking back at some of the anti-Europe campaigning from the National Front that I looked at about 7 years ago. This headline always struck me for some reason. Suspect I'll share more archive finds here - maybe repeat my front covers series!

There is also some older stuff out there but yeah, hopefully that gave you an idea of what I get up to. And didn't bore you totally stiff! When I'm not academicing, I have a cute but deadly cat, am a liberal political activist, and an avid gamer/nerd.(8/8)

You can also check out my writing on the ethics of archiving extreme material in https://manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526173874/. I'll return to the topic in an upcoming chapter (co-authored with the amazing Dr Siobhan Hyland) on wellbeing with extreme archives and teaching. (7/8)

I am also an archivist, and run a major university-held collection that has come from a prominent UK antifascist magazine. I write about the ethics and pedagogies around extreme collections and how we can use them for teaching and for outreach. (2/8)

Following feedback, and interest from abroad, we have switched our workshop/conference on local contexts of extremism to an online event. If you'd like to come along, or give a talk, do get in touch! Some great talks already lined up. 🗃️
