I’m only midway through my first watch of “Sátántangó,” and I can confidently say that we’ve lost a genius.
Breaking News: Bela Tarr, a Hungarian director whose long, grim films like “Werckmeister Harmonies” made him an art-house titan, died at 70.

If a head of state commits a crime, they should be taken into custody and subjected to the rule of law. Unless such a head of state is the president of the United States. Then, they cannot be taken into custody, apprehended, indicted, or otherwise subjected to the rule of law. Do I understand this?

It was hard to convince Americans torture is wrong as a moral principle during Bush's term, and that was with the debate about whether torture makes us safer. I'm afraid for a portion of Trump's base, that calculation matters less. Idea of torturing undocumented immigrants may even bring pleasure.

I’d like someone to introduce a bill making it legal to vandalize any tomb containing the remains of Donald J. Trump. It takes time to pass legislation. Let’s get the ball rolling.

This is fantastic. And true.
It would be weird to play soccer using the tennis rules. So why are we writing fiction with the unnecessary limitations of film? I have some theories. And I wrote about 12 things film teaches us wrong (and 4 it teaches us right) about writing prose. Please join me!

You can *maybe* get away with capitalizing "the President" or "the First Lady" when they are being used to refer to the only living person who holds that title, though it's extremely old-school and -hat. There is no excuse for "Presidents" or, worse, "the Presidency." None.

This is hysterical. Cuomo is hyping his bona fides among religious “leaders” and the accompanying lists shows he has netted three endorsements in NYC’s largest borough. Three.

A.I. is changing classrooms. We spoke to the co-founder of Alpha Schools about how her private K-12 schools are using A.I. to generate personalized lesson plans and enabling teachers to spend their time motivating rather than teaching students. nyti.ms/3JHIZub

I've just been musing over how many people don't already know this. That folks don't know (or care) how NYC works is, frankly, a large part of why our politics is so chaotic.

Zohran Mamdani is calling for city-owned grocery stores. NYC already has them.
The idea has broad support from progressives, while some critics warn against “radical socialism.” But New York already has city-owned grocery stores.
