Trying to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains and bolster U.S. and allied manufacturing makes total sense. But the bill will do the opposite by undercutting U.S. energy supply and manufacturing with a web of unworkable red tape.

Why even bother with long-run economic change & industrial policy if you don't get the chance to see it through?

Biden went all in on economic change, giving other progressives confidence to back things like industrial policy. But after the Democrats loss many are questioning whether it's worth it?
🗽 | NEW REPORT: Why are progressives losing elections, even when the economy is growing? We went to Washington to speak to Biden's former White House staff and other officials to find out where it all went wrong.

Yup, and organizations like the Environmental Law Institute continue to train govt officials from other countries on the success of Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act programs and how they can be replicated.
Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵

Cannot emphasize this more. Please give this thread a read. The same story is playing out with DOE-funded projects—tens of billions of dollars of awarded *contracts* tied up as a result of the “pause.” This will have ripple effects across the economy and companies/NGOs/states should make it known.
Not paying grantees with signed grant agreements is illegal. While there are certain activities EPA has discretion to pause, such as designing new competitions and making new awards, once a grant award is signed with a grantee the government is legally obligated to pay them.

Important to note the vast majority of BIL/IRA grant and loan $ is going towards manufacturing/supply chain + grid projects--none of which is implicated in Sec. 2 of the Day 1 EO. Also, @romany-webb.bsky.social perfectly captures the implications of the BIL/IRA disbursement "pause" in this piece.
🧵 Many assumed IRA rollbacks wouldn't be day-one priorities for Trump. "That was wishful thinking," reports @maeveallsup.bsky.social. Here's what's actually happening with the funding pause for #renewableenergy and #electricvehicles. (1/5) Good resource for #energysky peeps w/ companies:
