It may be in bad taste to call out a reviewer like this, but I don't believe anyone who gives weaknesses like this, as if it isn't empirical common sense for anyone working with MLLMs that larger models give better outcomes when inference speed isn't relevant, is acting in good faith.

Saw an insanely cool paper (Weihao Tan @ NTU (sg) plus Bytedance and PekingU collabs) on the other site: a VLM agent pretrained on human gameplay videos + action primitives can fully play video games.

Very impressive work, esp. the inference process.

Damn. I saw ICCV claimed 97% reviews in by the deadline May, using the same system, so this is a pretty big gap.

Ethical concerns being Schaeffer and Gerstgrasser used Kempe's feedback as part of human verification without their knowledge or consent, and quality concerns being their results are completely different. Schaeffer denies the accusations and notes they were excluded from the discussion with PCs.

I remember talking about almost exactly this concept with a friend just a few months ago. We didn't have the bandwidth to investigate further, but it's a super useful application and I'm happy and validated to see this paper out.

Has anyone been doing or planning to do any qualitative tests on GPT-4.5?

Early vibes I've been hearing say it's better on benchmarks (obviously) but apparently Karparthy did a vibes test and 4.5 failed spectacularly despite OpenAI claiming that this is the kind of task it should do better at.

My paper on nanoparticle quantification is out! I did this work at my prev. lab. We ensembled obj. detection and classification with handcrafted features to classify monomers/oligomers in optical images (no SEM/TEM needed!)

Everyone else out there posting how many hundreds of citations they've reached but I'm just a chill guy just happy to have broken two digits this year

Most years I'd struggle to put down 4 books, but this was actually an insanely productive year for reading for me.

(honorable mentions to Gideon the Ninth for landing at #5)

(dishonorable mentions to the Poppy War trilogy for being the 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘵 books of the year)

I hardly read poetry, but I *do* work with LLMs. I think that made the difference.

Once you have an idea of which particular aspects of 'creativity' LLMs struggle with, it becomes pretty obvious.
