I'm working with NYC schools that are committed to exploring strategies to support MLLs, reading professional texts, planning scaffolded instruction, and encouraging students to use language in flexible/purposeful ways.

Conferring at its best...
When conferring with readers and writers, having clear and predictable structures is so helpful. This is my go-to structure for goal-setting conferences, which comes from my book, A Teacher’s Guide to Reading Conferences https://buff.ly/40bisd7

Home School Connections

When school leaders, teachers, and families work together the result is higher rates of academic achievement, attendance, & social-emotional development. #MBK #parenting

I just spent yet another day in a NYC public school supporting teachers in implementing a mandated curriculum that they had no voice in choosing.

Teachers deserve to have a say in decision making. They deserve our trust and respect.

“The one who does the work does the learning.”

- Terry Doyle

I’ve always wondered about the origin of this fabulous quote that offers sound advice to educators.

Great ideas on how to nurture a love of reading!

Especially for those implementing a mandated curriculum…

“don’t be afraid to substitute a text that will accomplish the lesson objectives but be of greater relevance or interest to your students.”
How do you inspire a love of reading in your classroom? Share your stories and join me in celebrating the joy that reading brings to our classrooms! Small changes can make a BIG difference!

We cannot overemphasize the value of peer discussion.

There’s nothing more important than getting books into students’ hands…and homes!
What if we let students choose 2 or 3 books from the classroom library to borrow over winter break?

"Before curricula and materials, fidelity should first and foremost be to our students."

"How can we make good choices with what we are mandated to use so that our students remain firmly at the center of decision making?"

This is currently our greatest challenge in NYC public schools.

Starting PD with a school wanting support for teachers of ENLs. Love this question to start a dialogue:

“ In what ways do I invite emergent bilingual students to bring their entire linguistic repertoire so that they can fully construct meaning as writers and thinkers?”

Still pondering this data presented by Kylene Beers at #NCTE2024
ALL students deserve to be exposed to high level thinking and learning.

This should be posted in every school.
In classrooms, the one doing the talking is the one who’s doing the learning.
