Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth is the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and make sure all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. #Juneteenth

June is National Pride Month. This month commemorates the Stonewall uprising that took place on June 28, 1969. The first March took place in Manhattan in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Stonewall. It took 30 years for Pride Month to become official in 1999.

This event brought together high school and college graduates from across Lincoln and connected them with resources and organizations who want to see them succeed. Congratulations class of 2025!

On May 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which forced nearly 50,000 Native Americans to relocate to designated territories west of the Mississippi River. This mass displacement facilitated the ‘Trail of Tears’.

On May 2, 1963, school-aged children skipped class to march through downtown Birmingham, Alabama, in what has come to be known as “The Children’s Crusade.”

Students gathered everyday to call for national attention. Hundreds were beat, jailed, blasted with water cannons, and attacked by police dogs.

Ahmed H. Zewail was the first Egyptian and Arab to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for developing a rapid laser technique that enabled scientists to study the action of atoms during chemical reactions. The breakthrough created a new field of physical chemistry known as femtochemistry.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Robinson endured racism from fans, players, and teammates. He was the first recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947 and won the National League’s MVP Award in 1949.

Mrs. and Dr Mays had the chance to attend the LB3 legislative floor debate today. Nebraska’s current system divides its electoral votes by congressional district. LB3, seeking a “Winner-take-all” system, was shot down today to a 31-18 vote.

Happy birthday Cesar Chavez, born March 31, 1927. Chavez is a labor leader and civil rights activist who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. He co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers labor union.

Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta is one of the most influential labor activists of the 20th century and a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. Huerta received the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.  Find out more at www.womenshistory.org

Mrs. Rowena Moore became the first Black woman to run for the Omaha City Council. Moore founded the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation in 1971, working alone, using her money. Through the foundation, a historical marker was placed in 1987 at 3448 Pinkney Street, the site of his birth home in Omaha, NE.

In 1971 Elizabeth Davis Pittman became the first Black judge and the first female judge in the state of Nebraska, being appointed to the Douglas County Municipal Court.

Throughout her career, Pittman was an advocate for women and Black people in the legal field amid segregation, racism, and sexism.

Zanzye H. A. Hill was the first Black woman lawyer to graduate from the University of Nebraska in 1929, and became legal counsel to Woodmen of Union Insurance Company, the largest Black-owned insurance company in the country. She later taught law at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
