Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth is the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and make sure all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. #Juneteenth

June is National Pride Month. This month commemorates the Stonewall uprising that took place on June 28, 1969. The first March took place in Manhattan in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Stonewall. It took 30 years for Pride Month to become official in 1999.

On June 2, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signed a measure guaranteeing full American citizenship for all Native Americans born within U.S. territorial limits.

It would be decades before all 50 states granted Native American citizens the right to vote.

On May 2, 1963, school-aged children skipped class to march through downtown Birmingham, Alabama, in what has come to be known as “The Children’s Crusade.”

Students gathered everyday to call for national attention. Hundreds were beat, jailed, blasted with water cannons, and attacked by police dogs.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Robinson endured racism from fans, players, and teammates. He was the first recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award in 1947 and won the National League’s MVP Award in 1949.
