Having just finished the game yesterday, 1000% yes. WTF?!

It’s so good, and completely blew past my expectations, but man is it tragic.

Was it wise to complete this emotionally-heavy game on a Sunday night when I need to be sleeping to prepare for a day of work and then be able to think on the fly for a high-stakes TTRPG session? Well, no. But here we are, thinking about life and death and the moments we paint in our heads.

Prestige and clout can be great, to be clear! Marginalized professionals can say “I was recognized for my efforts at The Game Awards” and use that to open doors that may have normally been closed to them. This was still a mechanism for opportunity and inclusion. That’s why this is so disappointing.

If it had been promoted upfront as a tool for prestige or clout - win award, get free ticket to TGA and afterparty, have your name and face projected on stage, then go on your merry way - this probably would’ve been received better and with pragmatic expectations on both sides. Alas, here we are.

As the technology stands today, you could expect a whole lot of flawed, unreliable, “hallucinated” bugs and collateral that critical business decisions would be based off of. That’s terrifying to imagine. Entire studios and IP would get shuttered. That seems extreme, but is it?

There are things that AI can help with. Scraping user stories and bugs to identify acceptance criteria and turn that into test cases? Sure, go nuts. But games are deeply complex with visual, audible, interactive experiences that constantly evolve and have varying definitions of what fun really is.

How very Area 51-coded of you.

Wow. It’s ridiculous for such critical roles in the industry - which in many respects have been the brunt of the layoffs - to go unrecognized. Super festive. Really motivates attendance.

As several folks have pointed out, LA has been through hell this year. Y’all deserve something good. 🍻
