Case in point, many progressive hams had concerns about the far-right intolerance discouraging really nice, tolerant people from joining the hobby, & sent an open letter to the ARRL to see if they'd make a statement about it.

The thought that "politics is taboo" amuses & saddens me. I've been a ham since 1992, & remember being told that same thing. But it's never been true, in my experience. More accurate to say that expressing anything political that challenges the ultra-Conservative status quo is taboo.
