"The image shows the NGC 346 star cluster. Here, thousands of specks of light blanket the blackness of space. A ribbon of thick orange cloud runs along the bottom edge of the image, rounds our lower right corner, and streaks up the right side. A similar patch of roiling orange cloud can be found near our upper left. Between these gas plumes, centered near the top of the image, the star cluster is densely packed with specks of white, blue, and purple light. At our left, a large, bright white, gleaming dot is surrounded by purple mist. This is a hot, young, massive star, sending powerful winds outward from its surface. A patch of smaller dots, other young stars, can be found inside a faint purple mist near the center of the image."

A pair of interacting galaxies. The larger of the two galaxies is slightly right of center, and is composed of a bright, white center and a ring of blue, gaseous filaments. The center of this galaxy shows Webb’s eight-pronged diffraction pattern. There are three filaments of gas and dust moving from the ring toward the center. At the top left of the ring is a noticeable gap, bordered by two large, blue pockets of dust and gas. The smaller galaxy is made of hazy, light blue gas and dust. Many small red, green, blue, and yellow galaxies are spread throughout the background, with some being hazier in composition and others having more defined spiral patterns.

Scientists have announced that a dim star in a constellation easily visible after dark from the Northern Hemisphere is finally on the verge of exploding. The binary star system, called T Corona Borealis (TCrB), could become visible to the naked eye next week. 🧪 🔭

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a small dark nebula in the constellation Orion. The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion’s Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex.

Postcard18: Star cluster Pismis 24

The star cluster Pismis 24 lies in the core of the large emission nebula NGC 6357 that extends one degree on the sky in the direction of the Scorpius constellation. Part of the nebula is ionised by the youngest (bluest) heavy stars in Pismis 24. The intense ultraviolet radiation from the blazing stars heats the gas surrounding the cluster and creates a bubble in NGC 6357. Read more about this image here.

Cold, wispy blue clouds are illuminated in the infrared by the glow of the young, outflowing protostar Ced 110 IRS 4 (orange, upper left). Light from numerous background stars, seen as orange dots, is used to detect ices in the cloud, which absorb the starlight passing through them.

Core of the Crab Nebula|NASA|
The core of the Crab Nebula is a pulsar, which is a small, rapidly spinning neutron star at the center of a massive dead star: The pulsar is the dense core of a star that died in a supernova explosion. It's about the same mass as the sun, but compressed into a sphere that's only a few miles across. The pulsar spins 30 times per second, emitting pulses of radiation ranging from gamma rays to radio waves. This makes the Crab Nebula easy to detect with a telescope. The pulsar's magnetic field and energetic particles create a "pulsar wind nebula". This nebula includes: Bright wisps: These wisps move outward from the pulsar at half the speed of light, forming an expanding ring. Glowing gas: This gas forms a swirling pattern of cavities and filaments. Ghostly blue glow: This glow is radiation given off by electrons spiraling in the pulsar's magnetic field. The Crab Nebula is located in the Milky Way, in the constellation Taurus, and is 6,500 light-years from Earth. It's also known as Messier 1 (M1). CreditsNASA and ESA; Acknowledgment: J. Messier 63, the Sunflower Galaxy |NASA|
The arrangement of the spiral arms in the galaxy Messier 63, seen here in a new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, recall the pattern at the centre of a sunflower. So the nickname for this cosmic object — the Sunflower Galaxy — is no coincidence. Discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1779, the galaxy later made it as the 63rd entry into fellow French astronomer Charles Messier’s famous catalogue, published in 1781. The two astronomers spotted the Sunflower Galaxy’s glow in the small, northern constellation Canes Venatici (the Hunting Dogs). We now know this galaxy is about 27 million light-years away and belongs to the M51 Group — a group of galaxies, named after its brightest member, Messier 51, another spiral-shaped galaxy dubbed the Whirlpool Galaxy. Galactic arms, sunflowers and whirlpools are only a few examples of nature’s apparent preference for spirals. For galaxies like Messier 63 the winding arms shine bright because of the presence of recently formed, blue–white giant stars, readily seen in this Hubble image. ESA/Hubble & NASA
