Conversely, even in relatively pretty-looking examples like this one, the character sprites have very bright, SNES-like color schemes matched against a very muted, realistic background, which makes the characters stand out in a very bad way where they almost look greenscreened into the game.

Another issue: the color palette of the character sprites and the backgrounds are completely mismatched. The closest historical comparison for an aesthetic like this is 90s-era 2.5D first-person shooters, and the object sprites/environment both used a unified 256-color palette in those games.

A blood-red sun creeps over the edge of its roof, illuminating a structure suspended across the massive pit, whose visage resembles a giant mechanical brain. A grotesque humanoid, an unclear fusion of rotten flesh and overcrowding machinery, attacks this same woman, slamming her repeatedly into the wall with inhuman strength, before she spied an opportunity to strike back by taking an unused weapon from the monster's belt.
