Over the last month, intensive preparations have been taking place, with tens of thousands of troops conducting marching drills and dozens of military bands practicing a repertoire of songs for the parade. These preparations were laid out in detail by General of the Army and Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces Aleksei Antonov on 24 May, with instructions for each of the active fronts to prepare 5 two-company battalions with 100 men in the company (10 squads of 10 men each) to represent them, the exact marching order of units, as well as an order to all Front commanders including air and tank army commanders to arrive in Moscow ahead of the parade. The bulk of the regiments arrived on 10 June, carrying with them the combat colours of units most distinguished in combat, as well as all captured standards of Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and Waffen-SS units. Following a rehearsal on Moscow's Central Airfield, a final rehearsal was held on Red Square two days ago, on 22 June, and the parade was publicly announced by Stalin issuing Order No. 370.
