19 Years ago this week I met the Mighty Rosie. 12 Years ago, I suffered a severe psychological setback and this week, I am in the same sort of place. What do all these dates have in common. A new Superman. The first film I went to see with the person who I would marry was Superman Returns. The first film I saw after my breakdown was Man of Steel and later today, my son and I will go and see Superman.

There are several origin stories for super heroes that are simple or iconic enough, to stick in the memory. The Wayne's in the alley, the spider bite followed by the dead uncle, the lightning and the chemicals, the doomed rocket ship and the cosmic rays. The simpler they are, the easier they become part of the pop culture vernacular. Superman's is one of those, years ago in his excellent All Star Superman, Grant Morrison wrote his origin down in 8 words, Doomed Planet, Desperate Scientists, Last Hope, Kindly Couple.

The disadvantage of age is that most of the pop-culture people you know about and creators of works you've enjoyed for many years are older than you are, the older you get, the more of them pass and bits of your childhood drip away into the infinite. Some though, catch you by surprise. This weekend comic, prose and TV writer Peter David passed away after an extended battle with illness.

They are safe from the encroaching vines inside a forcefield.

Every day I look at news, I see more and more the truth in the idea that we are in a dystopia. As a science fiction fan, it always seems like we are looking into that lens. A generation of being lost as a civilisation has gushed forth dystopian stories from the Handmaid's Tale to the Hunger Games, from the Walking Dead to Brave New World.

This DIC cartoon show first aired on 30 September 1985 with an episode called The Deathstone directed by Bruno Bianchi and Bernard Deyries. The episode starts with a meteotite crashing and emited strange radiation that a scientist believes will promote healing (based on ... I dunno) it's stolen by a UFO under the control of VENOM (Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem) which is led by Miles Mayhem who has his henchmen Cliff Dagger and Sly Rax, deliver the meteorite to him.

Nights of Tomorrow first aired 10 September 1984 and was written by the writing pair Mark Evanier & Kevin Paul Coates. It was directed by John Gibbs with Bob Richardson and was a joint production between Dungeons & Dragons Entertainment and Marvel Productions. Synopsis; In their ongoing efforts to return home, the six teens from Earth (Hank the Ranger, Bobby the Barbarian, Presto the Magician, Sheila the Thief, Erik the Cavalier and Diana the Acrobat) along with their pet unicorn Uni are told by the deliberately vague Dungeon Master to find Merlin the Magician whose reputation was made when he saved the town of Helix from an army of dragons 100 years ago.

Recently I did a post on Growing up in the Golden Age of kids TV. This produced (as many things do) a lively debate with my son. His argument that he did rather than I did, fell apart of course, he's wrong. But he argued this well and it made me re-examine my position and made me want to look at some of the examples.

Nostalgia is a trap. You look at the past with a sort of wistful self delusion. We look behind us and often only the good stuff is memorable. I'm as guilty as the rest of us, looking at the 90s as a great time, completely ignoring the fact that as it turns out was struggling with undiagnosed depression. I was miserable, I was alone, but I look at the past as some wonderful thing.

With a tenure that went from Christmas 1974 to March 1981, Tom Baker was the Doctor longer than anyone else in terms of TV stories (not counting audio dramas and books, there I said it) and is often the face of the show more than either his successors, or his predecessors. A huge container of this remarkable solution was spilled and splashed over Bob Blake, Harry's friend, causing him to disintegrate and become a pool of water on the laboratory floor!

Well it's been a week or so and Friday has arrived again like a long awaited loved one. So lets get some positives down. 1: Pride Last time I spoke about my boy's progress in Rugby. The weekend just gone, he started for the team. No longer a substitute who gets ten minutes, this time he was on the team. Me, his mum and my mum and dad watched along with my brother's dog (long story) and we watched what we expected to be a severe beating of the home team.
