In Sep 1918 Russell Vought's great grandfather James Jonathan "JJ" Flowers was living in Atlanta where his draft record states he was the President of the Camp Gordon Infantry Business Association. This is a fascinating story about immigrant soldiers there.

Hospital Director Asks for Help In Segregating Tots JACKSON, Miss. -The director of University Hospital Friday asked for suggestions on how children to keep white and Negro from playing together in the pediatrics ward. Dr. Robert Marston asked for suggestions after State Rep. Jim Mathis charged white and Negro children use the same wards, playrooms and toys at the hospital. Marston said this practice, is discouraged by officials "but sometimes hard to keep little children who are well enough to play in the hall from playing with children of another race.' Mathis and about 60 other House members signed a resolution asking that something be done about the matter. He was unable to get the measure to the floor, for a vote but said he would it up later "unless the situation is corrected."

No one knows for certain if there will be a flu outbreak in the United States this coming winter, but the risks are too high to gamble on doing nothing, officials said as the medical drama unfolded. Flowers Head of Business at 38-40 West Mitchell Street Journal of the opening Monday of Announcement is made, in today's the Flowers department store. 38-40 West Mitchell street. J. J. Flowers, I head of this business, though a young man, is one of Atlanta's pioneer dry goods and shoe men, and is a merchant with real progressive ideas. The new store is a model in many respects. It is in white throughout and the excellent lighting arrangements emphasize the idea of cleanliness and comfort. The store is stocked with the latest and most up-to-date goods, and among the innovations will be a rest room ladies and a baggage check room for the convenience of out-of-town! customers. These departments are now being fitted up. In the rest room will provided writing materials and free telephone, service, and the baggage room the baggage of out-of-town customers will be checked free. The store is only one block from the Terminal station. COLORED EDUCATOR APPEALS FOR AID In a letter to The Journal, Rev. Richard D. Stinson, principal of the Atlanta Normal and Industrial Institute, colored, makes an appeal for aid for the school. It has an indebtedness of $550 which must be met soon, this including a note and teachers' salaries, and attention is also called to the need of a new building.

WASHINGTON, April 9.-In the cabinet meeting and in a conference directly between the executive heads of the departments the whole subject of status of the Chinese immigration question as it will be after the lapse of the existing treaty has been thoroughly digested, and it can be stated that the administration feels that it has ample warrant for continuing to the rigid provisions of the Chinese exclusion act of 1892. regardless of the denunciation of the treaty. So far from opening the door to Chinese immigration, the lapse of the treaty will, it is said, actually render the entrance of Chinese into this country more difficult than while the treaty remained in force. This fact has been pointed out to the Chinese government by Minister Conger, who has not yet abandoned the effort to induce the Chinese to reconsider their denunciation. However, positively stated that the exclusion laws will continue to be enforced after December next, whether the treaty expires or not. Attorney General Knox has under consideration the validity of the exclusion law of 1902 in view of the denunciation of the treaty, and he will prepare and submit to the president an opinion on the subject. Both the president and the attorney general have discussed the matter with members of congress. It is being considered carefully, too, by the leaders of both branches of congress, if it be deemed some legisand lative action will be necessary, on it before adjournment. If it should. be concluded the denunciation of the treaty by China would render inoperative existing laws regarding Chinese exclusion the probable course of action will be to attach to one of the pending appropriation bills

After Kat Cammack's egregiously racist recent remarks, I started her tree. Hoo boy. Will take a minute for pertinent ancestry. BUT incidental finding, she's actually related to her mentor Ted Yoho, by marriage. I can't find anywhere she's disclosed that little nepo bit.

October 11, 1897. Speaker Mike Johnson's great grandfather Salvatore Messina arrives in the port of New Orleans. He gives his previous residence as Cefalù, Palermo, Sicilia, Italia. Between then and death in 1931 in Shreveport, I find claims but no Naturalization records.
