Asclepias exaltata. Similar to Common Milkweed but much more tolerant of partial to shade. Poke Milkweed can range in height from 2-6', and while it does spread, it is not aggressive. It prefers moist soil but will take average soil as well.

Rainy days give us a chance to see the spots in our yard that get wet

Introducing Acorus americanus.

Happiest in full sun. Standing water to spongy soils are ideal, as this plant can be used to stabilize soil on a river or ponds edge.

Vaccinium angustifolium or Lowbush Blueberry. This NJ native ranges from 6”-2’ tall w/ a colonizing habit. Full or part sun in dry, rocky, acidic soils with good drainage. Waxy white blooms in Spring turn to small blue edible fruit. Showy fall color on green stems adds great interest to this plant.

Aquilegia canadensis
Caltha palustris
Dicentra eximia
Iris versicolor
Meehania cordata
Penstemon digitalis
Silene virginca
Mertensia virginica
Just about any native azalea!

We will have these plants in stock this Spring.

Native insects need native plants.

This Promethea Silkmoth cocoon is quite a neat find on this Buttonbush here at the garden center.

Plants with cocoons are sold to our customers at no extra cost!😂

Have you met our friend 'Jacob Cline'?
Because of its true red color and tubular flowers, this plant is a favorite to hummingbirds. It is also enjoyed by all sorts of bees and butterflies. It is a host plant for various moths making it not only a customer favorite, but an ecosystem necessity.

Chasmanthium latifolium, emerging here at the garden center.
Northern Sea Oats has distinctive seed heads that will feed many birds and small mammals. It's very deer resistant but is a host plant for quite a few skipper butterflies.

Eupatorium maculatum 'Little Pye'- a dwarf Joe Pye Weed. I potted these up today. This is a new plant Introduction to the plant world that I was curious about. These are only supposed to be 12-15" in the garden. Time will tell, a miniature Joe Pye Weed would surely be interesting...!

Salix discolor, New Jersey Native Pussy Willow is just starting to open up at the garden center, so the second photo is just for show! It's is a must have for early season pollinators and also a host plant for Mourning Cloak and Viceroy Butterfly!

Hamamelis vernalis. Native to South Central United States but is hardy here in NJ. It blooms late winter and may retain some browned leaves. It gets up to 10-15' Happiest in full to part-sun.Tolerant of rocky, clay, and moist soils w/ good drainage. Some deer resistance. Fall color is gold-yellow.

Liatris pycnostachya is great for all sorts of pollinators.Topping out at 3-5', Prairie Blazing Star is happiest in full sun. It is a facultative plant but does not tolerate wet soils through the winter. It shows good critter resistance, and I can testify that it is drought and clay site tolerant.

A friend shared with me Asclepias amplexicaulis, Asclepias quadrifolia, Asclepias rubra, Asclepias variegata, and Asclepias viridiflora.

That's five different Milkweed that I have never seen in nursery production.

The challenge has been accepted! Advice is WELCOME!
