The unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point (pp) to 4.4%, continuing slow rise. Up 0.3 pp over the year.

Switching to weekly UI claims...

220K Americans filed new unemployment insurance claims in the week ending 11/15, similar to prior week's 228K.

Continuing claims also steady.

These have remined steady & are more reliable than corporate layoff announcements in measuring layoffs.

+119K jobs gained last month (mid-Aug to mid-Sept).
-33K jobs in revisions of prior 2 months.

But labor market has weakening over the last year.

Hires rate like 2011 is particularly worrisome, falling since Fed's hikes (figure).

Jobs have been stable for employed but tough for small share unemployed and wage growth has decelerated.
