Martin Hardware is a local treasure. We had a leaky kitchen faucet Saturday and could find no brand name or id# on it. We took the old broken faucet cartridge to MH. The man took one look at it, nodded, walked over to an entire wall of cartridges, and plucked out the exact right one. Awesome!

Richard Green’s daughter Marian and her husband Andrew Jackson Payne also worked at the Treasury Department. But there’s a photograph of Andrew on his Find a Grave page and I don’t believe he looks much like the man in the newspaper photograph with Lincoln Andrews.

Sorry, looks like something about the format of that first article made it too small to read. Hopefully this will work better.

Fool that I am, I went looking. No luck. But I did find a number of interesting articles about his distinguished predecessor, Mr. Richard Green.

I was downtown last night so I visited the tree! You are right—its blooms are almost finished so, like you, I didn’t pick up any scent. But the bees certainly did, and they were very busy scouting out the blooms that are still fresh.

Is the Basswood (aka American Linden) in bloom right now? Poet Amy Clampitt wrote an extraordinary description of the fragrance—

“. . . aromas
so intensely subtle,
strollers passing under
looked up confused,
as though they'd just
heard voices, or
inhaled the ghost
of derelict splendor . . .”

I just realized that the planting of the Basswood in 1924 would probably have been witnessed by inhabitants of the Home for the Aged, which then stood at 201 First Street where Hill and Wood now stands.

Yes, it’s only one block but it’s on a hill so I wouldn’t want to try it in a wheelchair. And could you navigate that block in a wheelchair at all if you’re starting out from the side of Elliot that has no sidewalk?

How could anyone watch the video of that arrest and not feel enormous respect for those two conscientious and brave young women? Is ICE trying to stir up a hornet’s nest?

Is there any hope that the Supreme Court will step up and stop the insanity? The words of Gwendolyn Brooks keep echoing in my mind:

I am not an expert or a serious chef like you, John, but I bought a 12-inch Cuisinart skillet from Wegmans about six years ago and it has served me very well. I love it. It looks like they might currently have the 10-inch in stock.

His haunting words for our town:
“The lynching of John Henry James will be far more damaging to the community than it will be to the alleged criminal. His troubles are o’er; those of the community have just begun.”

We have lost a great man. Dr. Virgil Wood grew up in Yancey Mills and graduated from Albemarle Training School. ATS Principal Mary Carr Greer took him to an NAACP Youth Convention when he was 16, and in 1953 he helped form the Albemarle County Branch Chapter of the NAACP.
