- London is "the third largest city in the world for starting AI companies" and the UK is "the third biggest player in AI globally, behind China and the USA"

So the latest U.K. Gov AI sector report is an interesting read to see how AI entrepreneurship & companies are developing.

- Healthcare is large proportion of AI activity (eg Life Sciences & Healthcare directly)
- Location wise London, South East & East of England account for 75% of office locations

This is great from @simonwillison.net much clearer than reported in the press.

The Anthropic copy right case is a payout for using pirated books (ie unauthorised digital copies of books) not for using books to train AI.

The NHS App is an essential part of the next decade of the NHS.
3 things we can learn from usage so far:
1)Good usage esp older groups needs to continue!
2)Still lots of non-use due to digital exclusion needs tackling
3) Surprising how many are unaware so need to do more to reach people!

Just making my way through this.

I’d recommend!

Agree the algorithms are a factor but also how who’s got spendable income, marketing & nature or fame have changed too

In the article I cover current uses from talking robots to ones that look like bears and pets!

I also touch on future direction of development, technological limitations and the dependence on a prepared workforce.

How do we scale individual care through tech? Are we too anchored to consumer tech models when health & care needs a different scaling model?

-AI 1st contact for general queries - handles 60% of calls rest go to people. Previously 30% were unanswered
-AI to validate correct attachments ensures contact time is well spent
-Workforce more structured to tasks not one person doing everything. This improves consistency & capacity.

-Biggest focus has been user experience so flexing up/down capacity with tech & workforce change
-Now have 80% contact online
-Using public cloud with on prem

Listening to journey of digitalisation of public services in Czech Republic. Incredible how banking has become the gold standard!

-Minister leadership is a prerequisite
- identify what success is
- Agree priorities
- Culture change is a must

I’m in Aarhus in Denmark today. I’ll be presenting on robotics in social care and on a panel discussion.

Already enjoyed interesting talks on tech, social welfare & how to help people to live the lives they want.

Digital leadership is not just about leading digital transformation but also about creating new behaviours, norms & identity in digital environments.

Thanks Liz, this is the annual tech budget. The 10B should build on past investments and allow the system to go further but there’s many dependencies & it becomes subjective on how much progress is “good”.

It’s also great to see funding to improve broadband & 4G connectivity with focus on rural connectivity.

Rural regions are areas where digital could have much greater benefits for access and convenience. This funding could help to continue to improve digital inclusion - faster & more affordable.

The review specified some of that money will go towards the single patient record & developing the NHS App but everything else is awaiting the NHS 10 year plan publication.

AI creates the opportunity to provide more care esp where there isn’t capacity or accessibility.

Preferences will vary by individual & change with time.

How human connection is protected & remains part of care needs to be decided with individuals & communities especially marginalised groups.
June 5, 2025 at 12:00 PM
We can get caught up in the concern of AI replacing human care but is this the right comparison?

There’s unmet care.
There are also people who don’t want or need human connection every time (eg due to fear of stigma). Or people who need care outside of working hours
June 5, 2025 at 12:00 PM
This is an opportunity to break from the past tech constraints to create a data layer that enables a future person centred and digitally enabled approach to care.
May 29, 2025 at 11:46 AM
But we shouldn’t assume tech will solve all these issues.

We need to ask what the problem we are solving, where tech helps and where we need to bring other approaches to bear.

Reflect on if this latest shock to the healthcare system creates more fragility or can create a path to anti-fragility (a healthcare system that can learn and adapt dynamically to pressures)

I cover the risk of competing for staff, the new leadership skills and behaviours needed.

The health sector is 1 of the 4 main sectors contributing to Britain’s productivity problem.
(According to research from Resolution Foundation.)

But it’s also the most physically anchored sector with high contact need so tech can help but how much is unknown.
